What are you grateful for this Thanksgiving? At Hacienda Pediatric Dentistry, we’re thankful for being a part of a caring, close-knit community. We love working with families all throughout Whittier, Diamond Bar, and Walnut. To show our gratitude, we’ll definitely be participating in activities this month to give back to the community. If you’d like to do the same, we’ve compiled a list of events going all throughout November that you can participate in, too. Enjoy!
Whittier High School Thanksgiving Food Drive School
12417 E Philadelphia Street, Whittier, CA 90601
Every year, Whittier High School hosts a food drive in honor of Thanksgiving. If you have a child at Whittier High School, you can donate items through them to the school. There are many people in need during this time of year, so the school appreciates all the help it can get. The Whittier School students, teams, and faculty are looking to collect non-perishable items such as cranberry sauce cans, evaporated milk, instant mashed potatoes, etc. Volunteers from the Interfaith Center pick up all donations and distribute them to people who need them most. You can check out the list of products needed at the food drive here.
St. Bruno Catholic Church Thanksgiving Food Drive Church
15740 Citrustree Rd, Whittier, CA 90603
If you are a part of the St. Bruno Catholic Church, you can donate items to their Thanksgiving Food Drive. We have many patients at our pediatric dental practice who regularly attend this church and plan on helping out with the food drive. Most people have extra food in their pantries that would be of more use in someone else’s home, so we encourage everyone to see what they can spare to help out the community. This food drive is being coordinated by Deacon Mike Freeman, whom you can reach at 562-947-5637.
Boys and Girls Club Thanksgiving Drive
7905 Greenleaf Ave, Whittier, CA 90602 (Main Clubhouse)
Since our pediatric dentist mostly works with kids, we know a lot of children who are a part of the Boys and Girls Club. Since the Boys and Girls Club is a nonprofit itself, it completely makes sense that the organization would want to pass their fortune forward.
Every year, the organization hosts a Thanksgiving Dinner for members and their families. The board and community is welcome to donate supplies and ingredients to make the night extra special. Participants of the Boys and Girls Club Thanksgiving Dinner will also have the opportunity to participate in a Turkey raffle, arts and crafts station, and photobooth with festive props. It’ll be a night to remember!
Tot Soccer
7630 Washington Ave., Whittier, CA 90602 (Whittier Community Center)
While Tot Soccer isn’t exactly a Thanksgiving event, it falls right within the season of giving. Between November 16th and December 14th, parents and their littles ones are invited to sign up for fun Saturdays on the soccer field. At the low price of $65, you can expose your toddlers to soccer and teamwork in a safe, loving environment. We love Tot Soccer because it’s an amazing community and family bonding experience that takes our minds off the insanity of the holidays!
This event is extremely safe, but if any of your children decide to pursue a sport like soccer more seriously, we highly encourage getting a custom made mouthguard from the dentist’s office. Soccer is a high impact sport that can easily result in head and mouth injuries without the proper equipment.
Thanksgiving Brunch
1 Industry Hills Pkwy, City of Industry, CA 91744
If you want to get away from the kids, this is the perfect opportunity. As much as we love seeing our family on the holidays, they are a little crazy. Thanksgiving Brunch with champagne is an amazing Thanksgiving event that allows parents a break from their kids and families after a hectic season of family reunions.
The Cima Restaurant hosts a tasty Thanksgiving Brunch Buffet at the Pacific Palms Resort, specifically for moms and dads who are tired of dealing with family drama. There will be amazing food and even better mimosas. If this sounds like something you’re interested in, make sure to book your babysitter for the morning right away! You’ll want time to explain your children’s quirks and eccentricities, as well as their dental care routines and dietary restrictions.
Whittier College Basketball
13406 Philadelphia St, Whittier, CA 90602
If you can’t quite afford a season pass to see the Lakers, you can just as much excitement from a Whittier College basketball game. Support your local community college sports by picking up a ticket for yourself and your family. You can bring the whole family!
Should you decide to attend a game, we do recommend bringing your own snacks! A lot of items sold at these kinds of events are extremely overpriced and unhealthy. Apple slices, string cheese, and olives are all great, tooth-healthy substitutes for popcorn, chips, and candy.
Qweerty Chimchar Community Day Meetup
6471 Bright Ave, Whittier, CA 90601
Get into the spirit of the holiday and give back on turkey day! This event is hosted by the Qweerty Chimar Pokemon Go gamers of Whittier and they are dedicated to making everyone feel welcome and making the world a better place. The Qweerty Chimar Community Day meetup is an opportunity for you to give back to nature and show your appreciation for the beauty of the world. There will also be giveaways, stickers, custom name badge stickers, an AR photo contest, and the chance to make new friends! The event takes place on November 16th from 12 PM to 3 PM and you can sign up here.
This Thanksgiving, we hope you have the opportunity to spend plenty of time with the ones you love. At your Thanksgiving feast, don’t forget to honor the indigenous people who sacrificed to create the country we live in today! History is important and your little ones will surely benefit from the lesson.
As pediatric dentists, we couldn’t help but leave a kind reminder to watch what you and your family are eating! There are tons of foods that are delicious and tooth-friendly. Brushing and flossing after such a hefty meal is also the best way to ensure you and your family maintain healthy teeth, too.
